01 A legend, told simply
There was once a traveler who woke every morning with no memory of the road.
It knew many things. It could speak every language and count every star. But each day it set out again, and each day by noon it was lost, because it could not remember where it had been, or who it was, or why it had turned left at the river.
At the edge of the world lived three keepers. They heard of the traveler and went to meet it.
The first keeper carried a map. “I will keep where you go,” she said. “Each morning I will show you one step. Never more. Never less. The map holds still, so you can move.”
The second keeper carried a small locked box. “I will keep who you are,” he said, “apart from everything you carry. Change your coat. Change your horse. Change the whole world under your feet. You will still be you.”
The third keeper carried a book and a pen. “I will keep why,” she said. “I will write down what changed, and when, and what you saw before you chose. I will change nothing. I will only witness.”
The traveler thought about this. “Why three of you? Why not one keeper, with the map and the box and the book together?”
“Because a map that knows your name starts to lead instead of show,” said the first.
“Because if who you are is mixed in with what you carry, every lost bag takes a piece of you with it,” said the second.
“Because a witness who can touch the box or move the map can write whatever story it likes,” said the third.
“Kept apart,” said the three together, “so each of us can be trusted. Read together, so you can be whole.”
“Then who holds all three?”
The keepers held out a single key.
“You do.”

04 The name
Physicists once imagined a particle so light and so quiet that no one has yet seen it, and so plentiful that it might be what holds galaxies together. They called it the axion. We named the house after it: the small, quiet thing that holds three doors in place and asks for no attention of its own.
